The Lutsey family settled in what is now Slocum Township in 1785. They established the first settlement known as the" Lutsey Settlement”. Others followed in their footsteps and colonized the territory. A sawmill was erected by John Rosencrans in 1836. The following year, in 1837, William Lutsey built the first frame house. Slocum Township was formed from a segment of Newport Township in 1854. It was named in honor of Joseph Slocum of Wilkes-Barre.
