Anosy is one of the 22 regions of Madagascar. It is located in the southeast of the country, on the eastern side of what was once the Toliara Province. The name Anosy means "island" in Malagasy.

Because of the strategic sea route along the coast, Anosy has been an important crossroads in Malagasy, Muslims and Europeans. In the middle of the 1600s, it was the site of the first French colonial settlement in the Indian ocean. The region was part of the Kingdom of Imerina during the greater part of the 1800-ies and the part of the French colony of Madagascar since the end of 1800-ies to 1960-ies.

Its exports have included human slaves are sent to the Mascarene Islands and in the United States in 1700-ies, live cattle are exported to réunion for almost 300 years, sisal, natural rubber, rosy periwinkle, graphite, uranothorianite, lobster, sapphires, and ilmenite. Because of its biodiversity and unique wildlife, the efforts begun in the 1980-ies for the protection of the environment and tourism in the region.

The region suffers from poverty, 80% of residents do not have access to clean water, 16% suffer from serious respiratory diseases, and literacy-at least 20%.
