The Brothers Karamazov (1958 film)

The Brothers Karamazov is a 1958 film made by MGM, based on Fyodor Dostoevskys novel The Brothers Karamazov. It was directed by Richard Brooks and produced by Pandro S. Berman. The screenplay was by Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein and Richard Brooks. It was entered into the 1958 Cannes Film Festival. The brothers are played by Yul Brynner, Richard Basehart and William Shatner in his film debut.


The Vikings (film)

The Vikings is a 1958 epic historical fiction swashbuckling film directed by Richard Fleischer and filmed in Technicolor. It was produced by Jerry Bresler and stars Kirk Douglas. It is based on the 1951 novel The Viking by Edison Marshall, which in turn is based on material from the sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok and his sons. Other starring roles were taken by then husband-and-wife Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh as well as Ernest Borgnine. The film made notable use of natural locations in Norway. It was mostly filmed in Maurangerfjorden and Maurangsnes, captured on film by cinematographer Jack Card ...


Dracula (1958 film)

Dracula is a 1958 British supernatural horror film directed by Terence Fisher and written by Jimmy Sangster based on Bram Stokers novel of the same name. The first in the series of Hammer Horror films starring Christopher Lee as Count Dracula, the film also features Peter Cushing as Doctor Van Helsing, along with Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, Carol Marsh, and John Van Eyssen. In the United States the film was released as a double feature with the Universal Pictures film The Thing That Couldnt Die, and was retitled Horror of Dracula to avoid confusion with the US original by Universal, ...


Rickshaw Man

Rickshaw Man, also released as Muhomatsu, the Rickshaw Man or The Rikisha-Man, is a 1958 color Japanese film directed by Hiroshi Inagaki. Set in the 1900s, it tells the story of Muhōmatsu, a rickshaw man played by Toshiro Mifune, who becomes a surrogate father to the child of a recently widowed woman played by Hideko Takamine. The film is a remake of a 1943 film of the same name.

The Captain's Daughter (1958 film)

The film tells about the nobleman Grinyov, going to military service in the fortress, where he falls in love with the commanders daughter, Maria, and fights for her in a duel. After that, Pugachev organizes an uprising, conquers the fortress and executes Marias parents, but he gives Grinev the freedom. Soon he learns that Pugachevs accomplice forces Maria to marry him.

  • February 27 – Harry Cohn, the remaining founder of Columbia Pictures and one of the last remaining Hollywood movie moguls, dies.
  • February 16 – In the Money by William Beaudine is released. It would be the last installment of The Bowery Boys series which began in 1946.
  • November 15 – During production of Solomon and Sheba in Madrid, Spain, actor Tyrone Power dies of a massive heart attack. The production of the film was halted and was later finished in late 1959. Power, who was playing the role of King Solomon, was replaced in the film by Yul Brynner.
  • May 15 – Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer releases Gigi, one of the last classic MGM musicals. Directed by Vincente Minnelli, produced by Arthur Freed, and written by Alan Jay Lerner, the film is released to considerable critical and commercial success and would become the highest-grossing musical ever made by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, until Thats Entertainment! in 1974.
  • December 16 – MCA Inc. acquires the Universal Pictures studio lot for $11 million. It would later acquire the studio.
  • May 17 – Joseph E. Levine presents a picture on his own for the first time with 1954s Attila in an all-out exploitation saturation booking in the United States earning rentals of $2 million.
  • April 22 – Sol C. Siegel becomes head of studio operations at MGM.
  • August 31 – Carry on Sergeant, the first film in the popular British Carry On series, opens.
  • January 29 – Ascenseur pour lechafaud is an early example of the French New Wave. Le Beau Serge is credited as the first French New Wave feature.
  • The second installment of Sergei Eisensteins Ivan the Terrible is officially released, having previously been shelved for political reasons. It would be the last of Eisensteins Ivan the Terrible trilogy as the director died during production on Part III.
  • April – Samuel J. Briskin leaves MGM and rejoins Columbia Pictures later becoming Vice President and General Manager of the studio.
