Comillas is a small township and municipality in the northern reaches of Spain, in the autonomous community of Cantabria. The Marquessate of Comillas, a fiefdom of Spanish nobility, holds ceremonial office in the seat of power at a small castle which overlooks the town. The Comillas Pontifical University was housed here before it moved to Madrid, and the old university buildings are among the finest examples of architecture in the town. Besides this, there are many notable medieval and baroque buildings.

Since the second half of the 19th century, the Spanish Royal family began spending their summers in Comillas, and a large part of the Spanish nobility, whose numerous descendants still often every summer the city. As a result, Comillas left an imprint on architectural monuments such as palaces and monuments by the famous Catalan artist in particular, i.e. Gaudi and Domenech I Montaner. Since the second half of the 20th century, however, in the South of Spain and the Islands became more popular in connection with increase of inclination to the sun direction, and so places like Marbella, Sotogrande or Mallorca has become attractive prospects for the rich and famous. Although the city has seen an upsurge in recent years, it still retains its character as a "Paradise for decadent and restrained nobility".

Comillas was the capital of Spain on day, August 6, 1881, after the conclusion of the agreement between the king Alfonso XII and the Council of Ministers gather for a formal meeting in the city.
