ⓘ Montdidier, Somme

The commune has existed since before Roman times, possibly corresponding to the site of Bratuspance.

Under Karl, the donjon was built on the North-West of the city, on the Cape Cretaceous, at the Prieuré. It was here, in 774, that Desiderius, king of the Lombards, was a prisoner of Charlemagne, giving the town its name in French, Didier.

The first Church was built near a castle on Heldwide around 948, the wife of Hilduin 1st house of the counts of Montdidier"

In 1184 king Philippe II of France, the outlying buildings of the city burned during the war for the possession of the Amienois and Vermandois. In 1195, the city received its community Charter.

In 1472, Montdidier was set on fire by the Burgundians. Charles the Bold, is reported to have said: "these are the fruits of war."

Under the old regime, Montdidier was in the province where one of the eight provinces of Picardy and the seat of the bailiwick established in 1516 by decree 1575, Henry III of France created the elections of Montdidier, the granting of tax-raising powers to elected representatives.

In 1590 in the commune threatened and eventually was invaded by the troops of Henry IV of France.
