Were elected from each of 18 constituencies after the Assembly, the reduction in numbers of the members of the Northern Ireland act 2016 only five rather than six MLAs. The reduction was negatively affected candidates Unionist bloc which lost its majority for the first time in the history of the Assembly. In SDC also had a negative impact, losing it only in West Belfast place.

The acting speaker Robin Newton unofficially convened a meeting on March 22 to pay tribute to the former Deputy first Minister Martin McGuinness, who died the day before.

However, with the DUP and Sinn FEIN cannot agree on the form of mandatory coalition government, the Assembly was not an official meeting. On 27 April, the talks were suspended until after the early General elections on 8 June and runs until 29 June 2017 for the parties to achieve agreement, but this deadline was repeatedly extended over the next three years.
