The Dongcheng District of Beijing covers the eastern half of Beijings urban core, including all of the eastern half of the Old City inside of the 2nd Ring Road with the northernmost extent crossing into the area within the 3rd Ring Road. Its 40.6 km 2 area is further subdivided into 17 subdistricts.

Settlement in the area goes back more than a Millennium. It is not formally become a district of the city to the establishment of the Chinese Republic in 1911. The city name was first given to the reorganization of 1958; it existed in their present form since the 2010 merger with the former Chongwen district to the South.

Beihai includes many of Beijings major cultural attractions such as the Forbidden city and Temple of Heaven, UNESCO world heritage site. More than a quarter of the major national historical and cultural sites are inside its boundaries, while a similar proportion of those who are protected at the municipal level.
